Guadeloupe Fishing Report

"Surprising!!!" is the word that came back so many times about Guadeloupe fishery. It is now my third season on the water since I guide in Guadeloupe and I came to a better understanding of the fishing areas. I've found new spots for big snook in shallow mud, larger baby tarpon and new flats for single bones, pods or schools. June, September and October 2007 were really neat for tarpon action from the Mitzi 17. January 2008 to April 2008 was an incredible time for big snook. The biggest one caught was a 18 lbs and the biggest sight a 30 lbs that surge from the deep to the side of the Mitzi at less than a rod length. Bonefish have provide intense action and many nice ones from 8 to 10 lbs had been caught and from what customers says they really give a harder fight than in many renown place such as Los roques in Venezuela or even in Bahamas. If you are looking for a new place to spent your fishing or family holidays, you came to the right spot. Guadeloupe is a very unique fishery from fishs a size you didn't expect to find, from remote flats to the ones close to coast, imagine this picture the beache is crowded with peoples and swimmers, then two or three guys came out the car, flats boots, rods in hand and chest pack, enter in the water and less than hundred yards form the beach start to cast at big french permits...Surprising isn't it. That's Guadeloupe, not only a fishery but also a country with nice french restaurants, bar, night club and whole lot of activity for your kids and wives, shopping, horse riding, snookling, scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, kite-surf, natural parcs and many more. Come down and enjoy a full fishing week or a couples days fishing and spent time with your family.
So many great people came down to fly or spin fish and team with me for a couple days a week or so. I'd like to thanks all these people for they confidence.

Today was a great day!!
I met with Thierry again (he enjoyed so much his first day) to another boat ramp at 8 am. On the boat I had bring a 9 wt for snook, a 12 wt for big tarpon and a light tackle spin rod.
I poled Thierry in a little bay around 10 feet deep close to a deeper chanel about 50 feet. Several big ones where rolling in the spot most of them in the channel...after a follow in the less deep part of the spot Thierry ask me to throw a plug. So be it...first cast in the chanel wack!!! I hooked in a 50 pounder two jumps later he split the plug. "Thierry, reel on the fly rod and take the spin rod, the next one is for you" three cast later he hooked BIG MAMA wizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz god damn rush far away!!! Battle Royal!! the 'poon jumped 6 time on all. 45 minutes of intense fight...light rod...light reel the Mitzi handled the more than choppy water of the chanel very well and finally he landed the MAMA around 100 lbs, long and thick fish. Some quick shots and he swam away.
We moved to a close mangrove seeking snooks, we found one around 12 lbs in shallow mud that gave Thierry the fin. Tide, brownish mangrove water and hot sun not allow us to sight cast and action dramaticaly slows to no fish for the rest of the day...so what!! hte greatest part had been done and for Thierry as it was is second saltwater experience it was more than a succes.

The fishing has been excellent the last two weeks not so many takes but a lots of fish sight bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook.

We had some very nice days with 6-7 snook in the 4 to 15 lb range sight in shallow mud.
Some 7 lb and 5 lb had been landed.
The baby tarpon fishing is now excellent at low tide in mangroves. As we go futher in the hottest months big tarpons coming from the deep will arrive on the mangrove and mangrove flats on june july august and september.
We average 25 shots at sighted bones each days and the permit fishing is really great with good biters and at least 20 decent shots by day at tailers on the permit flats.
The week of the Super grand Slam we sight while wading an huge permit more than 45 lb and Dave had he great shot at him, both of us new he seen the flie as he turned on it when it hit the water.

On my side since the Super Grand Slam in end of April I caught 2 permits from a hungry bonefish school. Those fish once hooked are such great fighters.
