Saltwater Fly Fishing Gear

Equipment Checklist

Recommended Fly Rods and Reels

    For bonefish and snook, packing a 9’- 8/9 WT rod would be ideal. It should be saltwater proof with a flex action tip to help with casting into the wind.

    For the larger tarpons and permits, we recommend a 9’ – 9/10WT rod. These fish are capable of breaking a rod, so don’t forget to bring an extra if you have one.

    Reels should be progressive brake and saltwater proof.

    If you are a trout fisherman, beginner fly fisherman or you don’t have the proper rods or reels for your trip, we are more than happy to offer you the necessary equipment for all your fishing needs.

==============================================================

    For the 9/8 WT rod, 109 yards of backing in 20 lbs is the minimum. 164 yards of backing will have you covered. For your 10/11 WT rod you’ll need a minimum of 164 yards of backing in 30 lbs. 220 yards of backing will allow you to face all situations comfortably.

    We recommend fluorocarbon for the tippets. For bonefish, align 1-1/2 the length of the rod. For tarpon, use a shock tippet from

20 to 60 lb.

    For fly lines, the weight forward tapered lines are ideal to cast into the wind. A floating line will be the right choice for most of the configurations

    If you tie flies, then you are welcome to bring your own material. Otherwise, we recommend flies for bonefish and permit in sizes 4

to 1, and for tarpon and other fish in sizes 2 to 4/0. We do sell popular local flies in limited supply if you would like to buy some.
